Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) has appointed Satoru Mochizuki as the chief coach of the Indonesian women's national team.
PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir announced on Tuesday (20/2/2024) that Satoru has been contracted for two years to lead the Indonesian women's national team, antaranews.com reported.
"Coach Satoru, chosen to lead the women's national team, has a remarkable coaching record and is well-equipped to advance women's football in the country," he said during a press conference in Jakarta.
"I chose Japan because the tradition of women's football in Japan is very strong. They have been World Champions once and have qualified for the Women's World Cup finals nine times since 1991," Chairman Erick continued.
He emphasized that Satoru's appointment is part of PSSI's collaboration with the Japan Football Association (JFA), which was formalized in May 2023.
Mochizuki, a former player for Urawa Red Diamonds and Kyoto Sanga, was part of the Japanese National Team squad during the 1990 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
After retiring, Mochizuki began coaching Kyoto Sanga in 1998 and Vissel Kobe in 2000, before transitioning to coach the Japanese women's national team in 2008.
Mochizuki's expertise led Japan to win the FIFA Women's World Cup in 2011 in Germany and a silver medal at the London 2012 Olympics.
"This appointment aims to revitalize women's football in our country and proves that we at PSSI are not only focused on the men's team," said Chairman Erick.
