Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Indonesian National Police (INP) has uncovered that students, hailing from 33 different campuses, who fell victim to human trafficking in Germany were being exploited as manual laborers in roles completely unrelated to their fields of study.
Brigadier General Djuhandani Raharjo Puro, the Director of General Crimes at the INP Criminal Investigation Agency, disclosed the finding on Wednesday (27/3/2024), saying that the victims, despite being engineering students, are forced into manual labor positions, commonly referred to as "kuli" in Indonesia, instead of pursuing their intended careers.
One victim, identified as a student of engineering, has been compelled to work as a manual laborer, tasked with lifting and carrying goods.
The exploitation is a grave violation of their rights, leading to potential charges of human trafficking, he said.
The method of human trafficking represents a disturbing trend, diverging significantly from the legal internship programs typically offered in Germany.
