inp.polri.go.id - Police arrested several provocateurs during the demonstration on April 11, 2022, in Makassar City, South Sulawesi. The arrests were made in a different place on Monday night, (11/4/22).
Kapolda Sulsel, Inspector General Drs. Nana Sujana, M.M., confirmed the news of the arrest. He said that the riots at the demonstration on April 11 in Makassar were caused by certain groups.
"There are no longer students in that demonstration because towards the end of iftar there were several groups that also do a demonstration, but I saw that they were not from the student group, and they are only causing riots," explained Kapolda Sulsel when asked for confirmation, Tuesday (12/4/22).
Initially, the demonstration of 2,000 students from various alliance groups who gathered at several points around the South Sulawesi DPRD was peaceful. However, a riot broke out shortly after DPRD members met with the masses. The riot started when several people in the crowd started throwing things.
“Initially it went well, we have also coordinated the DPRD for mediation, and it has been well received. However, a few moments later, a group, which we suspect is not a student, made a scene by throwing things at the DPRD building," said the Two-Star General.
Due to the riot, the police had to push back the protesters until they dispersed. Even though they had been warned at first, they continued to throw stones at the DPRD building.
During the riots, police barricades were set up and repelled the crowd. They were repulsed in two different directions, in Jl. AP Pettarani and Jl. Urip Sumoharjo. The police repeatedly asked the demonstrators to disperse while firing tear gas. The mass of demonstrators then started out of control and threw stones at the police barricades.
During the chaos, the police had to refrain from firing back. But because it was dangerous, the police occasionally fired tear gas at the demonstrators.
"But it was ignored, so we have to push them back, while still persuading them not to throw. However, it was still ignored, so we fired another tear gas as a warning," said Kapolda Sulsel.
