Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan) reported that three wives in Indonesia become victims of domestic violence every hour.
"One in four Indonesian women experienced violence in 2024, according to a survey. Meanwhile, Komnas Perempuan's data shows three wives fall victim to domestic violence from their partners every hour," said Andy Yentriyani, the Chair of Komnas Perempuan, on Monday (23/12/2024).
She highlighted the critical need for timely intervention, noting that delayed or partial responses often expose victims to repeated and escalating abuse, which can end tragically.
"Increasingly, we encounter cases of domestic violence victims either taking their own lives, being killed, or resorting to killing their abusers—a phenomenon known as femicide," Andy added, as quoted by antaranews.com..
She acknowledged progress in raising awareness and addressing domestic violence, but emphasized that significant challenges remain, including the prolonged struggle to pass the Domestic Workers Protection Bill (UU PPRT).
Andy also called for greater recognition and support for women advocating for human rights and gender equality, who often face intimidation, criminalization, and even fatal threats.
