inp.polri.go.id – The Unification Church, which was allegedly the reason behind the assassination of former Japanese prime minister, Shinzo Abe, is said to have close ties to former US President Donald Trump. The church came under the spotlight after the perpetrator of Abe's murder, Tetsuya Yamagami, admitted that he shot the former Japanese prime minister dead because of a grudge against the religious organization. Yamagami admitted that his life was difficult after his mother, a member of the Unification Church, poured most of the family property into donations to the church. Meanwhile, Abe and his grandfather, Nobusuke Kishi, are also mentioned in connection with the Unification Church. On the other hand, Trump reportedly gave a speech at an organizational event related to the Unification Church in the US. The Unification Church, which originated from South Korea, also has many followers in Japan to the land of Uncle Sam. Trump is said to have hosted the "Rally of Hope Think Tank," an event sponsored by the Universal Peace Federation in 2021. The federation was formed by followers of the Unification Church or Moonies in 2005, and is also linked to the Unification Church movement. As reported by The Straits Times, Abe became the first foreign leader to meet Trump when he won the 2016 US presidential election. The second meeting is said to have occurred because it was assisted by the Unification Church. According to Japanese magazine Shincho 45, the Unification Church helped mediate the meeting between Abe and Trump at the time. The Unification Church is even said to have close relations with many conservative politicians not only in South Korea, but also in Japan and the US. The Washington Post reports the church spends millions of dollars every year running their programs from conferences to lobbying in the US. The Unification Church also does not hesitate to pour money from its members to build a positive public image and forge alliances with conservative politicians. The Unification Church is said to have founded an international business empire, the Tongil Group. Tongil Group is a company from South Korea that is active in various business sectors ranging from construction, health, food, media, and entertainment. Tongil Group's business is well-known spread across various countries in the world. Tongil Group also owns a number of resorts in South Korea such as the famous Yongpyong Ski Resort from the film Winter Sonata.
