Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita called on the public to trust the government’s negotiators in response to the U.S. decision to impose an additional 10% tariff on BRICS member states and supporters.
“Let’s leave this to our negotiation team currently in the U.S.,” he said on Monday (7/7/2025), addressing U.S. President Donald Trump’s statement about applying tariffs to countries aligned with BRICS.
BRICS, originally comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, has expanded to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and now Indonesia.
While acknowledging that the tariff threat could impact Indonesian exports, the Minister also noted the move would have reciprocal consequences for the U.S.
He also pointed out Indonesia’s current positive export performance, which is a critical driver of national economic growth, alongside household consumption, investment, and government spending.
President Trump has said on Truth Social that the U.S. would not exempt any country supporting BRICS from the tariff hike, labeling BRICS as a "hostile" bloc to U.S. economic policies.
