Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) Chairman Erick Thohir apologized for Indonesia’s 4-0 defeat to Japan in the fifth round of the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers, held at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta on Friday (15/11/2024).
"I apologize for the result today; I know the excitement from the fans was incredible," he said in a statement following the match.
The loss left Indonesia with no wins after five matches, recording three draws and two losses.
Erick, who also serves as Minister of State-Owned Enterprises, took responsibility for the team's performance.
"I am responsible for the results achieved by PSSI," he added, according to antaranews.com.
Despite the setback, Erick urged fans to continue supporting the national team, emphasizing that the goal of securing a spot in the next round, by finishing in third or fourth place, is still achievable.
"We have five matches left, and we aim to meet the target," Erick said.
Indonesia’s next match will be against Saudi Arabia on 19 November 2024 at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium.
