Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Indonesian government announced that 20 out of 22 factories previously exposed to radioactive Cesium-137 (Cs-137) in the Modern Cikande Industrial Area, Banten, have been declared “clear and clean.”
“Of the 22 contaminated factories, 20 have completed decontamination and are officially declared safe,” said Bara Krisna Hasibuan, the Head of Diplomacy and Communication at the National Task Force for Cesium-137 Radiation Handling, on Friday (17/10/2025). “The situation is under control. The task force is working in full coordination to ensure public safety.”
Verification of contamination-free areas is jointly conducted by the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) and the Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (Bapeten). Meanwhile, the government reiterated that all cleanup costs must be borne by the polluting companies, in line with Indonesia’s polluter pays principle under the law, as reported by antaranews.com.
Authorities continue investigating how the contaminated scrap metal reached the PT PMT facility, which has since ceased operations.
