Inp.polri.go.id - Batam. The Indonesian National Police (INP) Forensic Laboratory is conducting a crime scene investigation to determine the cause of the deadly fire aboard the MT Federal II tanker at PT ASL Marine Shipyard, Tanjung Uncang, Batam.
The incident killed 11 workers and injured 20 others.
Riau Islands Regional Police Chief Inspector General Asep Safrudin confirmed that a forensic team from the Criminal Investigation Agency (Bareskrim) has been deployed since Thursday.
“We are waiting for the Lab’s official results to determine the cause,” he said on Friday (17/10/2025), as quoted by antaranews.com.
Nine witnesses, including company representatives and workers, have been questioned. Riau Islands Police are also reviewing the shipyard’s safety management, as this incident as the second fire involving the same vessel within a year.
“We will ensure accountability if negligence or criminal conduct is found,” Chief Asep emphasized.
Preliminary checks show the ship remained intact, suggesting the fire originated below deck.
