Inp.polri.go.id - Sumedang.  Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Bima Arya Sugiarto revealed that 43 islands across Indonesia are currently involved in territorial disputes, with most conflicts occurring domestically.

“There are 43 disputed islands in Indonesia. Around 21 are intra-provincial disputes, mostly in East Java, and approximately 22 are inter-provincial, mainly in the Riau Islands,” he said during a visit to Sumedang, West Java on Monday (23/6/2025), as quoted by antaranews.com.

Deputy Minister Bima Arya explained that many of the disputes stem from overlapping or incomplete administrative claims, including errors in coordinate registration or historical naming inconsistencies.

“The patterns are quite similar—one party registers a coordinate, the other hasn’t, or submits different evidence based on historical claims,” he noted, citing the recent case of four islands contested between Aceh and North Sumatra.

Unresolved disputes, the deputy minister added, are temporarily placed under the jurisdiction of the province with the strongest claim until final legal clarification is made.
