Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman declared a total ban on rice imports, insisting that no amount of foreign rice, “not even one liter”, will be allowed into the country, despite falling global prices.
His statement came after the seizure of allegedly illegal Thai rice imported by a company identified as PT MSG in Sabang, Aceh.
“One liter of imported rice cannot enter Indonesia,” Minister Amran said after a meeting with the House of Representatives’ Commission IV on Monday (24/11/2025). “President Prabowo has decided that imports are not allowed.”
He explained that this year’s national rice production is projected at 34.7 million tons, exceeding the government’s target of 32 million tons. He argued that the illegal entry of 250 tons of rice in Sabang may be small in volume but risks disrupting political stability and distorting public perception of food supply.
The minister also claimed that declining global rice prices, from USD 650 per ton to USD 340, are driven by Indonesia’s decision to halt imports, triggering pressure from exporting countries.
