Inp.polri.go.id – Bali. The Archipelagic and Island States (AIS) Forum, along with James Cook University (JCU) and Sam Ratulangi University (Unsrat) develops a tech who helps small fishermen and managing sustainable fish supply. This initiative born from the issues in managing fisheries at states respective region. AIS Forum then invites universities and research institution to collaborate in developing innovative solution from the issue. Indonesia is one of the biggest fish producers in the world. In 2023, government has set fisheries sector to be able produce 8.73 tons of fish. The massive fish sector in Indonesia has made researchers struggled to gather and use the data effectively. Moreover, the huge sector of fish in Indonesia has made the fish to be the food supply for Indonesians and other AIS Forum state member. Two fish experts, Neil Hutchinson from JCU, and Gustaf Mamangkey from Unsrat, then collaborates in developing sustainable fish utilization and management practices in Indonesia. The two then invites Fishcoin to develop sustainable fisheries practice in Indonesia with the use of cellular technology. Fishermen will be given incentive of mobile phone credit when they release their catch of young fish. With this step, they will also able to gather the data of the fishermen, who is catching the fish, how often, and what fish do they catch. The young fish that the fishermen catch would eventually grow and cultivate, which means maintaining population stability. For this small act, fisheries economy will gradually grow and become stronger because mature fish will certainly have a higher selling value. This technique is also known as 'mark, release and catch again'. On the other hand, the technique would also help researchers gather important data which would help develop fisheries in the region while also determining the number of fish in the area. With this information, government would then be able to design a more productive and economical fisheries. The project also indirectly showcases the huge potentials of AIS Forum members in blue economy development and local community empowerment. (ad/ta/pr/nm)
