Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) confirmed the presence of Cumulonimbus (Cb) clouds over Maros, South Sulawesi, at the time an ATR aircraft was approaching Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport on 17 January 2026.
BMKG Head Teuku Faisal Fathani said weather conditions at the airport were generally stable, but convective clouds were detected along the approach path.
“The weather was relatively stable, but Cumulonimbus clouds were present in the landing approach area and required caution,” he said during a hearing with the House of Representatives (DPR) on Tuesday (20/1/2026), as cited by antaranews.com.
BMKG based its findings on aerodrome weather reports and Himawari satellite imagery, which showed high and thick clouds around Maros.
Teuku said that the data was presented to describe meteorological conditions, not to determine the cause of the accident. The aircraft incident remains under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Committee.
