Inp.polri.go.id - Cirebon. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Kertajati Station is gathering data following reports of a loud explosion and a bright fireball suspected to be a meteor in Cirebon, West Java, on Sunday evening (5/10/2025).
Muhammad Syifaul Fuad, the Head of Forecasting, Data, and Information at BMKG Kertajati, said that initial data collection is underway to determine the cause of the phenomenon.
“Weather conditions were clear to partly cloudy when the incident occurred,” he said, as quoted by antaranews.com
Fuad explained that the boom was unlikely caused by thunder or earthquakes, as satellite images showed no convective clouds and seismic monitors detected no significant tremors in the region.
He clarified that meteor-related phenomena fall under the authority of space research agencies such as the National Research Agency (BRIN), as BMKG does not possess instruments to track celestial bodies.
Residents in Lemahabang and nearby districts reported seeing a fireball streaking across the sky around 7 pm, followed by a loud explosion.
