Inp.polri.go.id - Kupang. Senior Brigadier Nasrul Ikhwan Ninong, a police officer stationed at the Indonesia-Timor Leste border, has gone beyond his duty to safeguard a rare agricultural heritage—Lahurus, the giant tomato on the brink of extinction.
His journey began in 2022 when he noticed declining farmland productivity in Lasiolat, Belu Regency. Determined to preserve this unique crop, which only thrives in four villages, he cultivated the tomatoes himself while encouraging local youth to return to farming.
“We must believe that with hard work and sincerity, success will come,” said officer Nasrul.
His efforts paid off, inspiring five young farmers—including a former delinquent—to take up farming. He also expanded Lahurus’ market reach using social media.
For his dedication, officer Nasrul received the Indonesian National Police Chief’s Gold Pin in November 2023 and is now a nominee for the 2025 Hoegeng Awards.
His story proves that policing extends beyond security—it can also nurture hope and heritage.
