Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Indonesian Food and Drug Authority (BPOM) uncovered over Rp 31.7 billion worth of illegal cosmetics in February 2025, a tenfold increase from 2024.

Out of 709 facilities inspected nationwide, 48 percent violated regulations, including production and sale of unlicensed or hazardous products, according to antaranews.com.

“Mayoritas produk ilegal tersebut merupakan kosmetik impor -60 persen- yang viral di online,” said BPOM Chief Taruna Ikrar on Friday (2/5/2025).

He added that 205,133 cosmetic units from 91 brands were seized, with violations ranging from lack of distribution permits to containing banned substances like hydroquinone and steroids.

Yogyakarta recorded the highest violations, followed by Jakarta, Bogor, Palembang, and Makassar. BPOM warned that illegal cosmetics pose serious health risks and harm the local industry.

Consumers are urged to apply the “Cek KLIK” principle—checking packaging, labeling, permits, and expiry dates—before purchasing. Ikrar also called on influencers to educate the public on safe cosmetic use and urged online purchases only through verified platforms.
