Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Ministry of Religious Affairs announced Tuesday (17/2/2026) that the crescent moon, known as hilal, was not visible across Indonesia, meaning the fasting month of Ramadan this year will officially commence on Thursday.
Astronomical calculations presented during the "Isbat" session in Jakarta confirmed that the moon's position failed to meet the criteria established by MABIMS member countries. Based on these findings, the current month of Shaban will be rounded to 30 days.
"The results of the Isbat session establish that 1 Ramadan 1447 Hijriah falls on Thursday," said Religious Affairs Minister Nasaruddin Umar during the press conference, as reported by antaranews.com.
The decision followed a closed-door meeting involving astronomers, Islamic organizations, and diplomatic representatives. While 96 observation points were monitored nationwide, the moon’s elevation remained significantly lower than the required three degrees.
The announcement noted a minor discrepancy with the Muhammadiyah organization, which commenced fasting a day earlier based on distinct calculated criteria. Despite these differing methodologies, the Minister urged the public to maintain harmony and mutual respect throughout the holy month.
