Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The UN Development Programme (UNDP) has warned of a steep rise in digital gender-based violence fueled by artificial intelligence, especially through deepfake content, which has surged by 550 percent every five years in Indonesia.

“AI inherently increases the risk of violence against women, and 99 percent of deepfake victims are female,” said Syamsul Tarigan, the Gender Equality and Social Inclusion Analyst at UNDP Indonesia, during a press briefing on Thursday (20/11/2025), as reported by antaranews.com.

Globally, deepfake files jumped from 500,000 in 2023 to eight million in 2025, with the Asia-Pacific recording a rise of more than 1,000 percent, according to UNDP. The message was delivered during a joint campaign commemorating the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, involving UNFPA, UN Women, and Indonesia’s Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection.

Syamsul said low digital literacy worsens risks, citing over 330,000 recorded cases of violence against women online, while authorities have removed 1.9 million harmful contents. He urged law enforcement to improve evidence collection and adopt victim-centered approaches.
