inp.polri.go.id -  Ambon. Discussing About the Traffic in Ambon, Maluku Police Held a Public Dialogue on RRI The Maluku Regional Police held a public dialogue discussing traffic jams in the city of Ambon, Monday (1/8/2022). The dialogue, which was held at the RRI Ambon office, was also presented a special guests, the Acting Mayor of Ambon, Drs. Bodewin Wattimena, Maluku Transportation Expert, Prof. Dr. Ir Marcus Tukan ST.MT, Head of the Ambon City Transportation Service Robert Sapulete ST.MT and Ps. Head of Sub-Directorate of South Kamal Maluku Police Traffic Director, Commissioner Moses Alfons. Answering the question of the main cause of congestion problems in the city of Ambon, the Acting Mayor of Ambon, Bodewin Wattimena, said that this happened because the volume of vehicles was increasing every day. The increase in the volume of vehicles is not matched by the expansion of roads. This is also exacerbated by public transport drivers who do not comply with existing traffic rules. "So the solution to the congestion problem in Ambon city is only to build new roads and we will prepare this with supporting documents, both amdal and part of it," said the mayor. The mayor of Ambon gave his appreciation to the Maluku Police Chief, Inspector General of Police, Drs. Lotharia Latif SH., M. Hum., who took the initiative to hold a dialogue to discuss the issue. He revealed that transportation issues should not only be focused in the city center, but to other areas outside city to avoid congestion. "We have to build new terminals outside the city so that vehicles don't pile up in the city center, and with the existence of new terminals outside the city, it will improve the economy of people outside the city," he said. He hopes that the problem of congestion in the city of Ambon can be a common concern of all parties. Because, this problem is not only the responsibility of the traffic authorities. Agreeing with the mayor, the Head of the Ambon City Transportation Service, Robert Sapulette, added that congestion in the city of Ambon was caused by several problems. Such as drivers who still violate the traffic law, merchants whose their shop reached the road, and the flow of vehicles in and out of the Batu Merah Dalam area. "We, together with related elements, have other plan than building flyovers and underpasses, such as building overpasses, and all of this is our common hope to solve the congestion problem in Ambon city," he said. Regarding traffic regulation in congestion-prone areas, Head of Sub-Directorate of South Kamal Maluku Police Traffic Director, Commissioner Moses Alfons stated that he had carried out their job handling optimally. "Our personnel are giving their best in the field, but there are other obstacles, such as no new roads as the volume of vehicles is increasing every day," he said. Alfons also said that the Maluku Regional Police and the related elements had agreed and planned to build flyovers or underpasses at several points in Ambon City to unravel the current congestion. Regarding the problem of congestion in the city of Ambon, transportation expert in Maluku, Prof. Marcus Tukan, said that congestion in the city of Ambon is more to situational condition and there must be a new ways to handle this kind of problem. "So there must be a long-term alternative to solve this issue, such as building flyovers and all cars from outside the city of Ambon must be properly regulated because if it is not handled properly it will cause new problems in the field such as brawl and so on," he said. On the other hand, he admitted that there are still many state apparatus in Ambon who did not show any ethical driving in the road. He also hopes that all components that exist with the regional government can work together in solving the current congestion problem.
