inp.polri.go.id - Manokwari. The Department of Animal Husbandry and Animal Health, revealed that for 15 years there have been no cases of rabies due to bites from pets owned by residents in the area.
"We appreciate that no positive cases of rabies have been found from 2010 to this year," said Head of Animal Health Division of the Lebak Regency Animal Husbandry and Animal Health Service (Disnakeswan), Hanik Malichatin, as reported by Antaranews, Sunday (6/22/2025).
The Lebak Regency Government has continued to optimize anti-rabies vaccination (VAR) services since the discovery of a rabies case in Bayah in 2009.
The VAR service program was carried out in 2010 and until now no cases of rabies have been found.
"To this day, we have provided VAR services to 43 animals that transmit rabies," he said.
Furthermore, he urged people who have pets, such as dogs, cats, monkeys, ferrets, and rabbits should do VAR for free at the local Animal Health Center (Puskewan) Technical Implementation Unit (UPTD).
In addition, his party also optimizes counseling and education to the people to prevent the spread of rabies.
Rabies virus from rabies-transmitting animals can be transmitted to humans through bites, scratches, or licks from infected animals.
"If someone was bitten by animals infected with rabies, they must immediately receive medical treatment," he explained.
