Inp.polri.go.id - Timika. Rescue teams from PT Freeport Indonesia’s Underground Mining Response (UGMR) unit are still searching for five miners trapped underground at the Grasberg Block Cave in Mimika, Central Papua, 17 days after a deadly landslide of wet material.
“The search for our five colleagues continues,” said Katri Krisnati, the VP of Corporate Communications at PT Freeport Indonesia, on Thursday (25/9/2025), as reported by antaranews.com.
She noted that rescuers are working around the clock under extreme risk from shifting material and limited air supply.
UGMR teams are excavating from two access points with added infrastructure to penetrate deeper areas. Heavy machinery, including remote-controlled loaders, is being deployed to reduce risks to rescuers.
PT Freeport urged continued prayers and moral support for the operation. Two workers from contractor PT Cita Contract were previously found dead and laid to rest in their hometowns. The five missing miners remain unaccounted for as search efforts intensify.
