Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Indonesian government is verifying the citizenship status of two Indonesian citizens, identified as Kezia Syifa and Muhammad Rio, following widespread reports of their enlistment in foreign armed forces.
Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Correctional Affairs, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, confirmed on Monday (26/1/2026) that his office is working with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Indonesian Embassies to gather accurate data.
"We must ensure whether they are indeed serving in foreign militaries and verify their current Indonesian citizenship status. There must be legal certainty," Minister Yusril said, as cited by antaranews.com.
The investigation was done amid increasing public attention regarding Kezia Syifa, reportedly serving in the U.S. military, and Muhammad Rio, a former member of the Aceh Regional Police Mobile Brigade (Brimob), who is allegedly serving with the Russian Federation's forces.
Under Indonesian law, citizens who join a foreign military without presidential permission may automatically lose their Indonesian citizenship. However, Minister Yusril emphasized that the government will not rely on social media rumors and will follow strict verification procedures before taking any concrete legal action, such as the revocation of citizenship.
