Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Indonesian and British governments have designated the Peusangan Elephant Conservation Initiative (PECI) in Aceh as a cornerstone of their strategic forestry and biodiversity partnership.
Announced on Friday (27/2/2026), the initiative serves as a pioneering landscape-based financing model that integrates wildlife protection with local community welfare. The project initially covers 20,000 hectares, with plans to expand to an 80,000-hectare ecological corridor to secure the long-term survival of the Sumatran elephant.
"We position PECI as a landscape-based conservation financing model that integrates biodiversity protection, sustainable forest management, and community empowerment," Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni said, as cited by antaranews.com.
The collaboration was a follow up of a high-level meeting between Minister Raja Antoni and UK Minister for the Indo-Pacific Seema Malhotra. The partnership operates under the 2022 FOLU Net Sink 2030 framework, focusing on innovative funding mechanisms like carbon and biodiversity credits. By mitigating human-wildlife conflict and restoring habitats, the two nations aim to strengthen Indonesia's global leadership in climate action and forest governance.
