Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Minister of Foreign Affairs Sugiono urged Cambodia and Thailand to exercise restraint, cease military actions, and immediately return to dialogue amid escalating border tensions, during a Special ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Kuala Lumpur on Monday (22/12/2205).
The meeting was convened by Malaysia as ASEAN Chair to address the deteriorating security situation since early December.
“Indonesia appreciates Malaysia’s leadership as ASEAN Chair and encourages all parties to exercise restraint and stop military actions,” the Indonesian Foreign Ministry said in its official statement, quoting Minister Sugiono as reported by antaranews.com
Indonesia reiterated its commitment to ASEAN unity and peaceful dispute settlement under the ASEAN Charter, including the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation. Jakarta also expressed readiness to contribute constructively, including deploying personnel to an ASEAN Observer Team to monitor developments on the ground.
The meeting produced a Chair’s Statement emphasizing ASEAN centrality, trust-building, and renewed dialogue through bilateral channels or ASEAN facilitation. Civilian casualties and displacement along the border were highlighted as urgent humanitarian concerns requiring immediate attention.
