Inp.polri.go.id - New York. Indonesia has officially joined the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), marking a significant step in its commitment to global peace.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi submitted Indonesia's ratification instrument to the UN Secretariat in New York on Tuesday, during the 79th UN General Assembly, on Wednesday (25/9/2024).

Indonesia ratified the treaty after its adoption in 2017, with the Indonesian parliament passing it into law as Act No. 22 of 2023, effective December 20 last year.

“TPNW prohibits member states from testing, storing, or using nuclear weapons, and from facilitating such activities for others,” said Indonesia’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Arrmanatha Nasir.

Indonesia joins 93 signatory countries, with 73 having ratified the treaty. Within ASEAN, Indonesia stands alongside Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Indonesia plans to advocate for more nations to sign and ratify TPNW, aiming to reduce nuclear weapon risks and promote peaceful uses of nuclear energy.
