Indonesia, Laos, and Malaysia Persist to Resolve Myanmar Crisis

Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Indonesia, Laos, and Malaysia continued its concerted efforts, agreed upon during the ASEAN Summit in Jakarta in September 2023, to address the ongoing crisis in Myanmar. Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi highlighted the significance of the troika mechanism, which involves Indonesia as the previous ASEAN chair, Laos as the current chair, and Malaysia as the forthcoming chair, in ensuring the sustained handling of the Myanmar issue, antaranws.com reported. "At the Jakarta summit, ASEAN members agreed upon the troika mechanism to deliberate on implementing the Five-Point Consensus on the Myanmar issue," she said on Tuesday (6/2/2024) after a meeting with Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad bin Hasan Minister Retno explained that through the troika mechanism, Indonesia has furnished Laos with notes detailing engagements conducted with all Myanmar stakeholders, with the expectation that Laos, as ASEAN chair this year, will continue these efforts. During Indonesia's ASEAN chairmanship, over 265 engagements were conducted with nearly all Myanmar stakeholders. Minister Hasan underscored ASEAN's collective responsibility in preventing the Myanmar crisis from spilling over into neighboring countries or regions. The crisis in Myanmar erupted with a military coup against the country's elected government on 1 February 2021.
