Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Indonesian government has confirmed there will be no imports of rice or consumer sugar in 2026, citing strong domestic production, sufficient national stocks, and a firm push toward food self-sufficiency.

The policy was announced on Thursday (1/1/2026) following the finalization of the 2026 National Commodity Balance.

“Consumer sugar will not be imported, and there will be no imports of rice for consumption,” said Coordinating Ministry for Food Affairs official Tatang Yuliono, as cited by antaranews.com.

The decision applies nationwide and covers household consumption needs, while also ruling out rice imports for industrial use. Authorities said domestic farmers can fully meet demand, supported by healthy carry-over stocks from 2025 and stable production forecasts.

Officials said that the policy aligns with President Prabowo Subianto’s directive to protect farmers’ incomes and strengthen food sovereignty. Officials also encouraged industries to optimize local raw materials instead of relying on imports.

With adequate supplies of rice, sugar, and animal-feed corn projected for 2026, the government said import controls will remain strict to maintain price stability and farmer welfare.
