Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan announced on Monday (9/12/2024) Indonesia aims to stop importing salt, sugar, rice, and corn for animal feed by 2025.

During a limited coordination meeting on the 2025 Food Commodity Balance, he confirmed the government’s target to boost local production of these staples.

"We will no longer import corn for feed, salt for consumption, sugar for consumption, or rice for consumption by 2025," the minister said, as quoted by antaranews.com.

The country plans to produce 2.6 million tons of sugar by improving seed development, farm management, and partnerships with small and medium enterprises. For salt, the target is 2.25 million tons to meet domestic needs of 1.76 million tons.

Corn production is expected to reach 16.68 million tons, exceeding the 13 million tons needed for domestic consumption, allowing for potential exports. Rice production is also projected to hit 32 million tons, surpassing the domestic requirement of 31 million tons.

Minister Zulkifli emphasized that any surplus rice will be used for emergency food reserves in case of natural disasters.

"We aim to no longer import rice," he added.
