"I confirm that Indonesian National Police has the main duty to protect everyone, our citizens, including the religious figures. Therefore, Indonesian National Police would investigate this case seriously and professionally", the Chief of General Information Agency of the PR and Press Division of Indonesian National Police, Police Grand Commissioner Ahmad Ramadhan, when confirmed in Jakarta on Tuesday (28/09/2021).
In relation to the attack of Ustaz Abu Syahid Chaniago in Batam city, local Police have deeply investigated and arresting the perpetrator.
The initial investigation indicates that the perpetrator, who was named as the suspect, was treated in Banda Aceh Psychiatric Hospital three years ago.
"In relation of him being insane, it is not only a statement, but we are going to investigate it, either through psychiatrist check or previous medical records", Chief of General Information Agency of PR and Press Division of Indonesian National Police.
Police Grand Commissioner Ahmad Ramadhan advised people not to interpret the incident as a criminalisation effort towards religious figures, which could make the situation uncomfortable.
