Indonesians Shot by Malaysian Law Enforcement, Govt. to Send Diplomatic Notes

inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Five Indonesian migrant workers were involved in a shooting incident in the waters of Tanjung Rhu, Malaysia. One person was reportedly killed, while four others were injured.

Director of Protection of Indonesian Citizens and Indonesian Legal Entities at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Judha Nugraha, explained that based on confirmation from the Royal Malaysian Police, the incident involved the Malaysian Maritime Strengthening Agency (APMM) who shot the Indonesian citizen after he was suspected of trying to leave Malaysia through an illegal route.

The shooting occurred after the victim allegedly fought the officers.

"The Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur has requested consular access to see the bodies and provide assistance to the injured victims. We are also committed to encouraging further investigation into this incident, including the possibility of excessive use of force by the authorities," said Judha on Sunday (1/26/2025).

The Indonesian Embassy has also submitted a diplomatic note to the Malaysian authorities, demanding a transparent investigation into this incident. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur will continue to provide assistance and monitor the handling of the case by the Malaysian authorities.

"The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur will continue to monitor the handling of this case by the Malaysian authorities and provide consular assistance to Indonesian citizens," said Judha.
