Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Indonesia’s legal representatives in Malaysia are handling 150 citizens who are facing the death penalty across the peninsula, according to an official update released in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday (2/12/2025).
Indonesian Chargé d’Affaires ad interim Danang Waskito said the cases span investigation, trial, and appeal stages.
“Our legal attachés ensure every Indonesian receives proper legal assistance and a fair trial,” he said, as cited by antaranews.com.
The Indonesian Embassy and consulates in Johor Bahru and Penang have appointed defence lawyers for financially vulnerable detainees, monitored court proceedings, and conducted consular visits to check detainees’ physical and psychological conditions. Authorities also maintain communication with Malaysian police, prosecutors, courts, and prisons to secure humane treatment.
Most cases involve narcotics offences, while others relate to murder and serious crimes. The Indonesian government is strengthening coordination as Malaysia implements death-penalty reforms that allow sentence reviews and resentencing.
