Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung voiced strong support for law enforcement to impose severe penalties on a street criminal who targeted an Italian near the iconic Bundaran Hotel Indonesia (HI) roundabout in Central Jakarta.
"Now that the perpetrator has been caught, sentence them to the heaviest punishment possible," he said after inaugurating the Tian Fu Gong temple area in Pantai Indah Kapuk (PIK), North Jakarta, on Sunday (17/5/2026).
Governor Pramono said that street crimes and hooliganism cannot be tolerated, as they threaten public safety and risk damaging Jakarta's reputation as a top global city, noting that the capital currently ranks as the second safest city in ASEAN.
The underlying criminal incident took place on Thursday, when an Italian was using a Motorola Neo 60 smartphone on the sidewalk near Bundaran HI roundabout. A suspect riding a red motorcycle suddenly approached, snatched the device out of the victim's hand, and sped off. The victim sustained mild injuries from falling while attempting to pursue the fleeing vehicle. The entire robbery was captured on a nearby driver's dashcam, allowing the Menteng Police Office and the Central Jakarta Metropolitan Sub-regional Police to rapidly identify and eventually arrest the suspect on Friday.
