Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo has banned the use of zinc or corrugated metal roofing, locally known as atap seng, for all new low-cost apartments and government-funded housing projects in the capital.
The ban, issued at City Hall on Wednesday (4/2/2026), serves as a direct follow-up to President Prabowo Subianto’s national "Gentengisasi" (re-tiling) movement. The President aims to replace rust-prone and heat-absorbing zinc roofing with traditional clay or composite tiles to improve both urban aesthetics and resident comfort.
“I will order that new apartment buildings or houses built by the Jakarta Government can no longer use zinc,” Governor Pramono said, adding that the move aligns with the President's vision for a more "beautiful and dignified" Indonesia, as reported by antaranews.com
President Prabowo previously highlighted during a national meeting in Bogor that zinc roofing often symbolizes decay and contributes to sweltering indoor temperatures.
To support this transition, the national government plans to involve red and white cooperatives (KDMP) to produce affordable, high-quality tiles locally. While the policy currently targets new government builds, the city is evaluating schemes for existing residential areas currently dominated by zinc roofing.
