inp.polri.go.id - Palembang. South Sumatra Regional Police Chief, Inspector General Sandi Nugroho, officially opened the 2026 Joint Technical Working Meeting of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Division, Legal Division, Public Relations Division, and Medical and Health Division of the South Sumatra Regional Police.
In one of his remarks, Sandi focused on environmental protection efforts, particularly regarding anticipatory and mitigating measures for forest and land fires. This issue is crucial given the predicted intensification of climate change in mid-2026, requiring a swift and measured response from all elements of the police force.
"The peatland characteristics of South Sumatra make extinguishing fires extremely difficult once they have already spread. Therefore, the most strategic step we can take is early mitigation and prevention," stated Sandi in his remarks on Tuesday (6/2/2026).
He also instructed the ICT Division to optimize the use of information technology. Satellite-based hotspot monitoring and the use of soil moisture monitoring equipment in peat areas must be well integrated.
"If data indicates a decrease in water content, personnel in the field can immediately take anticipatory measures before the land dries out and becomes vulnerable to fire," he said.
Sandi further emphasized that resolving forest and land fires and future challenges for the police force require close collaboration without sectoral egos. He likened these four development functions to a complementary superteam.
Technology-based monitoring from the ICT Division must be supported by strengthening humanistic public communications from the Public Relations Division to educate the public.
"We cannot work alone. We don't need a superman, but we need a superteam capable of working together. We must be able to transform every dynamic into an opportunity to demonstrate that the National Police is present as a cooling system in the community," he explained.
