Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. A magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck Waingapu, East Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) at 2.21 pm on Monday (23/2/2025), according to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) on Sunday (23/2/2025).
The epicenter was located 36 km northeast of Waingapu at a depth of 10 km (coordinates: 9.34°S, 120.34°E). BMKG confirmed there is no tsunami potential.
Tremors were felt at Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) levels III–IV in Waingapu and level III in Ruteng. MMI III indicates noticeable vibrations indoors, while MMI IV suggests stronger shakes that may cause windows and doors to rattle, according to antaranews.com.
BMKG urged residents to remain calm and ignore unreliable information. “
No casualties or damage have been reported so far. Residents are advised to stay alert for possible aftershocks and follow updates from official BMKG channels.
