Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck the Tanimbar Islands in Maluku on Saturday morning (7/2/2026).
The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded the tremor at 4.20 am, with the epicenter located in the sea approximately 118 kilometers northwest of the islands. Despite the significant magnitude, the quake occurred at a depth of 100 kilometers, and officials confirmed that there is no risk of a tsunami.
"The 5.9 magnitude earthquake occurred at sea. at a depth of 100 kilometers," BMKG said in an official release shared via social media reported by antaranews.com
The tremors were felt at an intensity of MMI II in Saumlaki, the capital of the Tanimbar Islands Regency. As of Saturday morning, local authorities have not received any reports of building damage, injuries, or fatalities.
BMKG continues to monitor the region for aftershocks, advising residents to remain calm as the deep-sea nature of the event mitigated surface-level destruction.
