Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Melonguane, Talaud Islands, North Sulawesi, on Saturday night (10/1/2026), shaking several parts of eastern Indonesia, according to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).
“The data were released immediately after the event and may be updated as more information becomes available,” BMKG said in an official statement, as cited by antaranews.com.
BMKG reported that the quake occurred at a depth of 17 kilometers, with the epicenter located about 52 kilometers southeast of Melonguane. The tremor was felt at intensity levels of III–IV on the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale in Tobelo, the Sitaro Islands, and Ternate, and II–III MMI in North Minahasa, Bitung, and Morotai.
The agency confirmed the earthquake did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami but urged residents to remain alert for possible aftershocks. As of publication, no casualties or damage had been reported.
