Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Mexico has approved new import tariffs of up to 50 percent, affecting China, Indonesia, and several other Asian economies starting 1 January 2026.

The Mexican Senate passed the tariff bill on Wednesday, targeting more than 1,400 product lines, including automobiles, vehicle parts, textiles, apparel, steel, plastics, footwear, and household equipment. The measure impacts countries without free trade agreements with Mexico, such as China, Thailand, India, South Korea, and Indonesia, as reported by antaranews.com on Thursday (11/12/2025).

President Claudia Sheinbaum defended the policy as necessary to strengthen domestic manufacturing amid mounting U.S. pressure and rising trade tensions.

China emphasized the importance of maintaining stable economic ties and called for dialogue to manage differences. Beijing has also launched a trade-barrier investigation into Mexico, which remains ongoing. Mexico imported USD 129.79 billion in goods from China last year, while exporting USD 9.08 billion, with total bilateral trade reaching USD 138.87 billion.
