Inp.polri.go.id - Surabaya. Inspector General Asep Edi Suheri, the Indonesian National Police (INP) Head of the Nusantara Cooling System Operations has called on East Java REgional Police to intensify their political cooling efforts in preparation for the 2024 local elections.
As the second-largest province by voter list (DPT) in Indonesia and home to two major religious organizations, East Java faces a high risk of conflicts.
"We must anticipate potential issues as the elections approach," he said on Thursday (8/8/2024).
Chief Asep highlighted threats such as ethnic and religious conflicts, misinformation, and polarization that could undermine national unity.
Following President Joko Widodo’s directive on 1 July 2024, the police are tasked with calming political tensions, mitigating election misinformation, and ensuring a fair and peaceful election process.
Chief Asep emphasized that police efforts would include preemptive and preventive measures such as engaging with religious leaders, community figures, and youth through social activities.
East Java Police Chief Inspector General Imam Sugianto confirmed that despite a recent conflict in Gresik, his team is committed to ensuring a safe and harmonious local election.
"We are determined to make East Java a secure and harmonious region," he said.
