Inp.polri.go.id - Raja Ampat. Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources said on Sunday (8/6/2025) that the nickel mining operations by PT GAG Nikel on Gag Island, Raja Ampat, show no significant environmental or procedural violations.
“We observed from above that there’s no sedimentation in coastal areas. So overall, this mine has no problems,” said Tri Winarno, the Director General of Minerals and Coal, during a visit with Energy Minister Bahlil Lahadalia, as quoted by antaranews.com.
Despite this assessment, a mining inspection team has been deployed to evaluate operations at several mining sites in Raja Ampat before final decisions are made.
PT GAG Nikel, a subsidiary of Antam, is the only active producer among five licensed companies in the area. The company adheres to good mining practices and has reclamation measures in place.
Operations were temporarily halted on 5 June 2025 following public complaints about the mine's impact on Raja Ampat’s environment and tourism.
The mine operates under a Contract of Work and holds a legal permit over 13,136 hectares.
