Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra said that Philippine President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. is likely to commute the death sentence of Mary Jane Veloso, an Filipino drug trafficking convict, to life imprisonment after her transfer to the Philippines.
“Given that the Philippines has abolished the death penalty, it is highly probable that her sentence will be reduced to life imprisonment,” he said in a video statement on Thursday (21/11/2024), as reported by antaranews.com.
Mary Jane is set to be housed at Mandaluyong Prison in central Manila. Once her death sentence is officially commuted, it will fall under Philippine jurisdiction to grant clemency or change her detention status to house or city arrest.
Minister Yusril emphasized that Indonesia will maintain access to monitor developments through its embassy in Manila, ensuring Mary Jane continues serving her sentence under Philippine law.
President Prabowo Subianto has also received similar prisoner transfer requests from France and Australia, reflecting mutual agreements on justice and international cooperation.
