Inp.polri.go.id - Ternate. Mount Ibu in West Halmahera, North Maluku, erupted on Thursday evening (21/11/2024), sending lava and fire flashes 100 meters high from its summit. The eruption also produced a 700-meter-high ash column.
The eruption was recorded at around 8.20 pm local time, with ash observed drifting northwest. A seismogram recorded the eruption with a maximum amplitude of 17 mm and a duration of approximately 50 seconds, according to antaranews.com.
Mount Ibu, which stands at 1,325 meters above sea level, remains on alert at Level III. Authorities have advised residents and visitors to stay at least 4 kilometers from the summit and avoid the expanded 5-kilometer radius to the north, due to potential risks from falling debris and lava.
If ashfall occurs, people are urged to wear masks and goggles when outside to avoid health risks.
The local administration of West Halmahera has been instructed to maintain coordination with the Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG) for the latest updates on the volcanic activity and to help ensure public safety.
