inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The West Manggarai Sub-regional Police, have named a captain and crew member as suspects in the KLM Putri Sakinah ship accident in West Manggarai waters, which resulted in the deaths of four foreign nationals.
The East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Regional Police Public Relations Chief, Senior Superintendent Henry Novika Chandra stated that the suspect determination was made after police investigators conducted a case review on Thursday (1/8/2026).
The two suspects are the ship's captain, identified as L, and a crew member (ABK) in the engineering department or head of the engine room, identified as M.
The suspects were named after investigators presented the results of the initial investigation and inquiry, including witness and expert testimony, and evidence deemed sufficient to meet the elements of a criminal offense.
The two suspects are charged under Article 359 of Law Number 1 of 1946 concerning the Criminal Code (KUHP) in conjunction with Article 330 and Article 20 letter c of Law Number 1 of 2023 concerning the KUHP, regarding negligence resulting in the death of another person.
"Investigators assess that there was an element of negligence in the operation of the ship that led to the accident with fatalities," said Henry.
Following the determination of the suspects, police investigators will continue the legal process by completing the administrative investigation, coordinating with the public prosecutor, and compiling and completing the case file.
"We ensure that this case is handled professionally, transparently, and accountably, as it is a serious concern for us," continued Henry/
The NTT Regional Police also urge all business operators and users of maritime transportation services to always prioritize shipping safety standards to prevent accidents that could result in loss of life and legal consequences.
