Inp.polri.go.id - Karawang. President Prabowo Subianto officially broke ground on Indonesia’s largest electric vehicle (EV) battery ecosystem in Karawang, West Java, on Sunday (29/6/2025).
The $5.9 billion project—developed by ANTAM, Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC), and China’s CATL-led consortium—is part of the National Strategic Projects and spans across Karawang and East Halmahera.
“We can achieve energy self-sufficiency in five to six years,” said President Prabowo. “The key is solar power and battery technology, and today marks the beginning of that journey.”
The Karawang plant, managed by PT Contemporary Amperex Technology Indonesia Battery (CATIB), will begin operating in late 2026 with a 6.9 GWh capacity, expanding to 15 GWh. Upstream operations in Halmahera include nickel mining, smelters, and recycling plants.
The project is designed to be environmentally friendly and is expected to create 8,000 jobs, supporting the president’ broader vision of energy independence and green industrial growth.
