Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Minister of Religious Affairs, Yaqut Cholil Qoumas, called on Muslims to maintain mutual respects involving the start of Ramadan on different dates.
"Variations are part of our reality, but it's crucial to maintain mutual respect and uphold the values of tolerance," he said on Sunday (10/3/2024), as reported by antaranews.com
The government has decided that Ramadan starts on Tuesday while Islamic organization Muhammadiyah has announced that the start of Ramadan fell on Monday due to the difference of methods.
The government determines the start of Ramadan through traditional methods, primarily relying on the physical sighting of the new moon, known as Wujudul Hilal. Rather than relying solely on physical sightings, Muhammadiyah relies on astronomical calculations, known as Hisab, to determine the start of Ramadan.
Minister Yaqut encouraged Muslims to seize the opportunity of Ramadan for self-reflection, increased devotion, and unity beyond political differences.
"Let's transcend political divides and focus on spiritual purity," he added.
Echoing this sentiment, Abdullah Zaidi, Chairman of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), stressed the importance of mutual respect regarding the differing start dates of Ramadan. He underscored the significance of unity and compassion within the community.
"It's crucial to prioritize increasing our spiritual devotion and supporting those in need during this sacred month," Zaidi emphasized.
Ashabul Kahfi, Chairman of the House of Representatives Commission VIII, noted that the differences in determining Ramadan's start highlight the diversity of Islamic scholarship and interpretation.
"Regardless of when it begins, the spirit of Ramadan should guide us towards unity and solidarity," Kahfi said, urging continued dialogue and understanding within the Muslim community.
