Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) confirmed that a magnitude 4.0 earthquake striking Sukabumi-Bogor on Saturday was caused by a shallow active strike-slip fault.
The quake, at a depth of seven kilometers, was centered in Kabandungan, Sukabumi, West Java.
“Seismic records from our monitoring stations clearly show this was a tectonic quake, not volcanic,” BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center Head Daryono on Monday (22/9/2025), as reported by antaranews.com
Residents in Kabandungan and Kalapanunggal felt the strongest intensity (MMI III–IV), while tremors reached Bogor, Depok, and Palabuhanratu at lower intensities. The quake damaged five homes in Cipeuteuy village, though no casualties were reported. BMKG cited shallow depth, soft soil conditions, and non-quake-resistant housing as factors in the structural damage.
At least 39 aftershocks have followed, with magnitudes ranging from 1.9 to 3.8. BMKG noted the region’s long history of damaging quakes, including major events in 2000, 2020, and 2023.
