inp.polri.go.id – Deputy for Gender Equality of the Ministry of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection (KemenPPPA), Lenny N. Rosalin, said women have an important role in supporting the issue of energy transition which is one of the pillars in Indonesia's G20 Presidency. “Apart from being the energy users, women are also the green heroes. We can encourage women to take an active role in creating alternative energy sources that are safer, affordable, and have a positive multiplier effect," said Lenny in the C20 Public Consultation hybrid. Lenny said the gap from unpaid care work also resulted in women having to bear the impact of using traditional energy. Data from the World Health Organization (WHO) states that around 4 million people in the world die prematurely due to air pollution at the household level. This has a big impact on women, especially those who do work in the household or having domestic tasks. In addition to the need for efforts to prevent the people who die from air pollution at the household level, Lenny assesses the importance of regulating energy consumption that is more environmentally friendly, especially in the household environment. “The use of clean energy at the household level will have a positive impact on family health. Back in the day, our children study under light of oil lamps, now they study in a better light with electricity lamp. This means that we also provide opportunities for them to study in better conditions and and proof that we also contribute to future generations,” said Lenny. In addition, Lenny said the use of access to electricity can also increase women's productivity. This is because the time previously allocated to look for firewood can be used for other more productive activities. On the same occasion, Co-Chair of Civil 20, Aryanto Nugroho explained that the issue of energy transition is still accompanied by the Gender Equality, Disability, and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) approach so as not to cause negative impacts on women, children and other vulnerable groups. "Let's take the example of the transition from fossil energy to renewable energy, such as solar panels. This transition to solar panels, of course, requires technology or lithium batteries derived from nickel mining materials. Automatically nickel mines, smelters, battery factories, electric car factories, and others have to be opened. The most vulnerable parties in all this transition process are women, children, and other vulnerable groups, so the energy transition requires a GEDSI approach on its journey,” Aryanto concluded.
