inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Vice Minister of Environment, Diaz Hendropriyono, asked regional governments to support improvements in national waste management performance, which can reduce law enforcement for violations related to waste management.
"All waste management figures must be added more: the number of waste disposal sites (TPS3R), the number of waste disposal sites (TPST), and the number of waste disposal sites (RDF). But one must cutback: the number of cases (of waste violations), to demonstrate that management is good," said Diaz on Thursday (2/26/2026).
According to Diaz, the waste problem has become a notable issue whose handling can no longer be ignored. Therefore, it requires cross-sector collaboration and the active participation of all elements of society. These efforts should not only focus on downstream management but also be strengthened upstream, in line with applicable provisions and regulations.
He reminded that provincial and district/city governments have the authority and obligations under Law Number 18 of 2008 concerning Waste Management.
On the other hand, the Ministry of Environment will continue to fulfill its role as the next line of defense after local governments comply with applicable laws and regulations.
"We also need to emphasize that waste is a complex problem. This means that, according to applicable laws, Law Number 32 of 2009 and Law Number 18 of 2008, the KLH/BPLH can act as a second line of enforcement, when, for example, the governor fails to take action against a regency/city," explained Diaz.
On the same occasion, Diaz also expressed his appreciation to regions that have demonstrated good performance in waste management, earning awards from his party on the first day of the National Coordination Meeting (Rakornas) on Wednesday (2/25/2026).
