Inp.polri.go.id – Yogyakarta. Yogyakarta Election Supervisory Body (Bawaslu) collaborates with its regional police to monitor any potential hoax spreading and hate speech in social media ahead 2024 general elections.
Head of Yogyakarta Bawaslu, Mohammad Najib says that the joint monitoring would be in effect during 2024 General Elections campaign period, starting from November 2023.
“Obviously technology is required in our monitoring, and that is what we lack to effectively monitor each social media due to how many it is. And that is the reason why we collaborate with Yogyakarta Regional Police,” says Yogyakarta Bawaslu chief on Friday (9/29/2023).
According to him, their joint collaboration is a must knowing the potential threat of the 2024 General Election possesses with the spread of hoaxes and hate speech.
He assessed that there are still many “buzzers” who spreads negative information ahead the elections. On the other hand, he considered that most people is still very much vulnerable to hoaxes.
“Now, there are many ‘content creators’ who willingly work disgracefully by spreading negative messages. Become the ‘buzzer’ is not something to be proud of,” said Najib.
Although they have collaborated for a long time, their joint monitoring could have only in effect after the campaign period is officially started.
“The thing is, if the election campaign has not started yet, it was not within our authority yet. Moreover, regarding hate speech, it is not an election crime but a general crime," he said.
Other than inviting Yogyakarta Police in their effort to monitor the 2024 elections, he also asked community to actively report any contents that contains hoaxes or hate speeches in social media.
Furthermore, he urged the community to be more critical in receiving news or information from any sources.
