Inp.polri.go.id - Jayapura. The Indonesian National Police Commission (Kompolnas) has called for an immediate halt to the sale of firearms and ammunition in Papua, citing significant risks to both security forces and civilians.
“It is time for all parties to stop selling ammunition and firearms to armed groups, as it has severe impacts not only on security personnel but also on civilians,” Kompolnas Commissioner Mohammad Chairul Anam told reporters Thursday (2/10/2025), as quoted by antaranews.com.
The former National Human Rights Commission member warned that continued illegal arms sales could lead to further casualties and violence. He urged law enforcement to take strict action against individuals caught trafficking weapons.
Chairul Anam also emphasized the need for the Papua Regional Police (Polda Papua) to adopt more humanistic and dialogue-based approaches to foster safety and peace.
In March, Papua Regional Police uncovered a firearm trafficking syndicate, arresting seven suspects and seizing 17 guns, including long and short barrels, homemade firearms, and 3,573 rounds of ammunition.
